Steampunks, Pirates and Knights….Oh My!

Just by chance today I happened on a most enchanting little festival happening almost outside our door.  Coronation Park in the Norwood Grove area of St. Boniface was playing host to a gathering of creative thinkers and free spirits.

As you all should know by now that I am a proud card-carrying geek of some renown and am always ready to explore what ever festival or convention comes my way.   Today’s gathering had three main themes bringing many different classes of geeks, costume players and costumers together.  Steampunk, Pirates and good ol’ fashioned fantasy enthusiasts.

Everyone seemed to be having a great time mingling in the steamy afternoon heat in between the hourly thunder storms that have been passing though the area today.  Mosquitoes and rain can’t keep a good geek down for long and as soon as a shower had passed everyone seemed eager to mingle about again.

Normally as a blogger I try to stay a fly on the wall, just observing and not really becoming part of the action.  But today was one of those rare opportunities where I got to mingle and talk with people about their motivations and great costumes.

Here in pictures is a bit of what I saw this afternoon.

Letting Your Geek Flag Fly!

Over the last few months I have written a few posts about my geeky obsessions. Yes I freely admit that I do enjoy watching tales of monsters and mayhem weekly on Doctor Who. I will debate the merits of a pre-episodes 1-3 Star Wars Universe. While happily blogging from my own space; not my mother’s basement. In short my partner calls me a geek. Unlike alcoholics or intravenous drug users I don’t have a support group for my anti-social tendencies. Or do I?

GeekAdvancement.com is home to the Society for Geek Advancement. Founded by Shira Lazar and Lon Harris from the ideas put forward in the I Am Canadian beer ads by Molson Canadian. Shira thought to herself “Geeks out there deserve this too, eh?”

Why We Blog

Lots of people ask me why I blog and I rarely have a straight up answer for them.  Sometimes it’s because I need to get something off my chest.  Sometimes it’s because I like to post some pictures I have taken.

But in the end I guess it’s just because I have a voice.  One of many howling in this sometimes cold and inhuman world.  A voice that needs a place if not to be heard, then to be spoken.

If someone reads what I say that’s a good thing, if it’s good enough to be talked about that’s better.  If it’s shared and on and on and on.

The point is I guess that we are the voices of the free, we have the right to yell and rant or cry.   Many of us will give thanks this week.  Speaking of love and family, that’s cool too.

But the point is we can.  We are able, and we must.

As long as we have the ability we should express ourselves, because we can.  Let us rage about punk music in London, or cry about the death of a relationship.

This Internet is a glorious thing, for the people by, strangely enough the military.  But it’s ours now and let us never ever give it back.

Let us love and rant and share and care.
Why?

Because we can!!

I’ll get off my soap box now.

P.S. Because I can let’s have some porn star dancing!!
