On the Menu: Lions vs. Bombers – Grey Cup 99

Well as you all can expect I am getting a small house full tomorrow for the 99th Grey Cup.  My home town Winnipeg Blue Bombers are facing the B.C. Lions in Vancouver.

Blue and Gold Forever!!

So of course it falls to me to cook game day food. What do I have on the menu you may ask.  Well lots of things. Lots of things indeed.   I actually plan to round out the food groups this year which is something that has been lacking on past years.

Let’s paint Regina Blue and Gold!!

Alright people I am more than just a little perturbed, there are signs going up in this great town of ours that are an affront to the Swaggerville vibe that has been built up this season.

Yes I speak of the Green Riders assault on our senses a huge billboard on Route 90 at Silver northbound. The riders oath, a vile notion if I have ever heard one is just spitting distance from Blue and Gold holy ground.

Dave Wheeler DJ at Power97 and announcer at the Bomber games is taking up a collection to stick it to those banjo playing, combine driving in breeders from the province we affectionately call The Gap.

So here’s the deal, if everyone attending this Fridays game vs Hamilton can chip in a few bucks at Power97, conveniently at Polo Park across from the stadium he promises that every single dollar collected will go to decorating the queen city in festive blue and gold in time for our home and home stand against the Riders starting Labour Day weekend.

I know I am in for 5 or 10, are you?  Show your Swaggerville mojo by dropping a couple of bucks in towards the cause.  This outrage can not be accepted without a fight!

Swaggerville Update: To the many fans of the Blue Bombers across the world who have been asking for an update to the paint Regina blue and gold campaign.  I have a few pictures to show you of the progress we are making in plastering Regina with Bomber Swag.

The first as you enter “The Gap” (Saskatchewan)

Next we have a lovely sign inside Regina that proclaims our dominance not only in football but also Mathematics.

7-1 vs 1-7 you do the math!

I’ll try to keep you posted on any more updates to the rivalry.  I am borrowing and stealing computer time from who’ll ever let me in their door since our flood last weekend.

Super Bowl Madness

I just finished watching a full slate of NFL games today.  I don’t normally watch the American game but in an attempt to stay current with the manliest of conversations that will no doubt infest work tomorrow, I watched both final games.

Super Bowl XLV

In the afternoons first clash the Green Bay Packers battled the Chicago Bears.  This was a hard game for me to pick a team to root for.  I used to pull for Da Bears in my youth, but since I am surrounded by Cheeseheads at work I took the cowards way out and was rewarded with a Green Bay victory.   The game was full of turnovers and a lifeless 3rd quarter almost put me to sleep.  Da Bears fought back in the 4th but just didn’t have it in them to put Cheesehead Nation out of the running.

Green Bay Packers

In the second tilt, the NY Jets travelled to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers.  To be totally honest I only caught bits and pieces of this game.  I was enthralled with playing the Raving Rabbids on Wii.  Thankfully my video game crashed on me with enough time to see the final minutes and Pittsburgh take the game by 5 points advancing to the Superbowl.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Being a fan of the Canadian game I really don’t get all of the nuances of the U.S. game.  However since it is cold as all frozen hell outside and I was planning on having a lazy day anyway, it seemed the perfect fit.

Now I can successfully bullshit with the best of them tomorrow.  Secure in my knowledge of scores and enough of the big plays to make it seem like I actually know what I am talking about.

Wish me luck!

Bob

Grey Cup Sunday!

Today marks the playing of the 98th Grey Cup game marking almost 100 years of organized football in Canada.  Also lovingly known as the national drunk, it’s a day for the people to celebrate in a uniquely Canadian way.

A Proud Bomber Fan Celebrating a Canadian Tradition

As a country we know that we are barrelling headlong into yet another long bone grippingly cold winter.  Yet all across the country people will be shovelling off their lawns pulling out the second hand chesterfields out of the garage and setting up the big screen TV’s to watch the big game alfresco.
